Mc Cain must think we're nuts.
Who the heck is John McCain trying to fool?
The "fundamentals of (our) economy (are) strong" he says as another bank collapses only hours earlier. When called on it, he tries to pass off the lame excuse that he meant the American worker as what he was referring to. Then he had the nerve to suggest that any one that complained about his comment was also dissing the American worker.
?!?!
Are you kidding me man? John McCain has consistently voted against labor his entire career. Few Senators have a worse record. He has voted against anything that comes up to the hill that helps Joe Sixpack; you can count on Senator McCain to vote against it. He once arrogantly told constituents that he'd pay them $50 an hour to pick lettuce all season then proclaimed not one of them would or could do it. He was justifying undercutting of the American worker with illegal immigrant labor because they were unwilling to do the work. Does that sound pro American worker to anybody out there?
Not only has he been anti-labor he's also been a deregulator of industry and proudly so. As the Republicans absurdly claim this fiscal melt down is the fault of Democrats they won't acknowledge there economic philosophy, they proposed and enacted, (with the help of Bill Clinton and other Democrats admittedly) these policies of deregulation. With Bush the problem was compounded by a lack of oversight. Then appointing industry executives to boards that regulated their former industry. This culture of corruption isn't solely a Republican problem but the Republican President and 6 years of a Republican Congress have let it fester. We're here because of greed. Greed John McCain was instrumental in enabling it and nothing to prevent it.
We can all agree corporate influence in Washington isn't a good thing and John McCain has vowed to do something about those pesky lobbyists as soon as he's president. They are all busy now of course. Running his campaign. Meanwhile Barack Obama has even convinced the Democratic National Committee to stop taking lobbyist money and his running mate's son has agreed to give up his livelihood as a lobbyist. In short, McCain can lie all he wants, Obama has actually done something about it before getting into office. He's influenced a major shift in how campaign funds can be raised as he has racked up a record number of small donors.
Which brings me back to another point. Not only have the Republicans been out of control most of the last 7 years allowing industries to write legislation for themselves, Tom Delay created something called the "K" St. Project. The design was to control all the lobbyists, forcing firms to not negotiate with Democrats. They demanded that all lobbyists be Republicans or their firms would not get what they wanted. Corporate rule for our government has never been more evident than the Bush Administration's reign of error. Cronyism or a fixation on the same ideology the only job requirement. John McCain did nothing to fix this, most of the time he was all for it. Now we're supposed to trust the numbskulls that created this mess to fix it?
Just like we're to believe his running mate is a reformer of some kind.
Sarah Palin is equally dishonest. Pork barrel spending? As Mayor of a town of 5,000 she was able to wrangle, through her political connections (aka the old boys club she allegedly fought) $27,000,000 in federal funds. Despite claiming over and over that she opposed the infamous bridge to nowhere and told DC "no, thanks" she still took the money and allocated it towards a road to nowhere. Fiscally responsible? She left that town of 5,000 $22,000,000 in debt by doing things like making over her office to the tune of $50 grand. She claims she is against taxing small business but that's exactly what she did as mayor. As Governor she has made her priorities clear. Corporate interests trump the middle class.
Foreign policy experience? You know you can actually see Russia from Alaska, uh huh. (I was doing my Sarah Palin impression there). That's it. I bet there are a lot of Republicans out there with more experience but McCain didn't pick any of them. He picked her. Because those social conservatives love her. She's got moxie! Weeee! She hates the gays too. Likes the abstinence only education, though she does think the condoms are ok to her credit. Otherwise she's anti-contraception. *Ahem*Hypocrite*Ahem* She is anti-abortion, even in cases of rape. They love that! And if you do have the misfortune of being raped in her town be prepared to pay for your rape kit. Yeah, that's change we can all believe in, riiiggghhhhhtttttt!
Not many people are buying what McCain/Palin are selling anymore. Even conservative stalwarts George Will, Charles Krauthammer and David Brooks recently penned less than flattering opinions of Palin and her being picked by McCain in the first place. Even FoxNews is calling McCain surrogates out for his campaign ads misleading content. That's significant. I have no illusions the main stream, corporate owned and operated media is finally had enough and are starting to hold some people accountable. They ride the wave of pop culture as much as they help create it. No, it's now becoming more profitable to go after McCain because that's where the viewer-ship is. If he isn't careful he could become a symbol of everything he claimed to loathe about DC. Gone will be his maverick status and he will represent the status quo. Ironic, but when you sell your soul as McCain has in this campaign, what does one expect but irony?
Addendum: Related to the topic. Mike Huckabee made a comment contradicting McCain's latest flip flop in justifying deregulation of industry that really chaps my arse. Huckabee stated that the market had to correct itself acknowledging that "it's painful." Excuse me for a second while I point out the obvious. The Constitution of the United States does not exist to protect markets, it's to protect, "We the People." This attitude that government shouldn't interfere with markets neglects to consider it effects our quality of life and simply accepts that some suffering among the masses is just an unhappy bi-product. Oh well, some of those folks who enjoyed the boom will now bust, oh shucks. NOT ACCEPTABLE. This is the economic utopian worship of "free" markets and it contradicts the charge the US Constitution demands of our Government. It's purpose, is not to maximize profits or give corporations the ability to outsource jobs. Leaving it all up to the markets proves time and again that we become vulnerable. Until some liberal Democrat like FDR comes along and fixes everything. Understanding that corporations operate at the pleasure of the people just as government does and that government is simply the vehicle to ensure what's best for every American. Nothing in the Constitution guarantees rights to corporations or business in general. Our founding fathers were weary of tyranny from the wealthy and powerful as well as political. Our federal government is mandated by the Constitution to protect us, you and me, Joe Sixpack; and ensure everyone gets a fair shot. Whatever impedes that is un-Constitutional.
